Waukee Schools’ Picnic and Play Summer Program Provides Free Activities and Meals for Kids

Join Waukee Community School District (WCSD) for our summer Picnic and Play program June 3 through August 9. Activities and meals are available free of charge to every child 18 years and younger.

“We want to encourage everyone to visit our sites. Drew’s Crew has provided yard and board games for each site so kids can learn, play and enjoy a nutritious meal,” said Kaitlyn Scheuermann, RDN, dietitian for WCSD. “Most of our volunteers are staff from Waukee Community School District so this is not only an opportunity for kids to interact with their friends, but a chance to maybe see their teacher over the summer.”

Scheuermann is working to add additional events at each site this summer such as special appearances from high school and college athletes, police and fire departments, Blank Park Zoo and the local library.

Program Locations and Times

Meals will be provided, without identification or discrimination, on a first come, first serve basis, from June 3 – August 9 (all sites closed on July 4) at the sites and times as follows:

  • Windfield West Apartments – Monday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., 75 SE Windfield Pkwy, at the basketball court
  • Maple Grove Villas – Monday-Friday, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., 8602 Westown Pkwy, West Des Moines, IA, in the Community Room/Main Office
  • Sun Prairie Apartments – Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 6137 Vista Drive, West Des Moines, at playground closest to the corner of Vista Dr and 60th St
  • Jonas Circle – Monday-Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.,  1300 SE Jacob Drive, Waukee, in the clubhouse/main office

Waukee Schools is a participant of the Summer Food Service Program.  Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.
